India had fielded three 20km race walkers and one in 50km in the London Olympics, with K T Irfan finishing a creditable 10th with a national record in the former event while Basanta Bahadur Rana setting the same in the latter.

AFI president Adille Sumariwala told PTI that the federation's top brass and the coaches felt that India can do well in the Olympics in 20km and 50km race walk competitions.

"We feel that race walkers can do well in the Olympics, Asian and Commonwealth Games. All the 20km race walkers qualified for London in 'A' standard. Irfan finished 10th. Then Rana also created a national record in 50km," he said.

"So officials and coaches are of the view that India can be medal contenders in the Olympics in the two events," he added.

Sumariwala said the executive committee will study the report submitted by the chief coach about India's performance in London and start planning for the next four years.

"We will discus the report submitted by the chief coach threadbare and find out where we had done well and where we need improvements. The Executive Meeting is basically about the planning for next four years upto 2016 Rio Olympics.

"We will have the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games before the Olympics. So we would start planning for all these," he added.

Other issues on the agenda include the usual passing of the minutes of earlier meeting, passing of accounts, discussions regarding road races like the marathons held in many cities among others.

India is also hosting the Asian Athletics Championships next year in Chennai and asked about this, Sumariwala said, "We have already form a committee for this prestigious event and we have started our planning. We want to make the event a grand success," he said.
