Twenty eight trainees from African and Asian countries were today awarded diploma in statistical training at the convocation of International Statistical Education Centre (ISEC) here, organised by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).
Twenty three foreign trainees were undergoing fellowship programmes at the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) and Special Commonwealth African Assistance Programme (SCAAP) of the union government for the year 2016-17.
The ISEC comes under the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
The course provided training in theoretical and applied statistics at various levels to all the 28 participants selected from middle-east, south and south-east Asian and African countries.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of National Statistical Commission RB Barman said, "As more than half of our workers are engaged in agriculture, which is growing at half the rate of other sectors like industries and services, it is crucial to focus on this sector to raise productivity."
"As priorities remained for high growth, a national statistical system serves an important purpose for taking informed decision at all levels of the government," Barman said.
