A huge African fish eagle, found lying unconscious near the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary at Kodiakarai in the district, was today rescued by wildlife department personnel.
A group of fishermen spotted the eagle and informed wildlife personnel who provided first-aid, officials said, adding that initial examinations showed no signs of any physical injury.
The eagle was about two feet tall and weighing around 6-kg. Its upper body and feathers were rich brown in colour and it had large wings and legs.
Though the Point Calimere Sanctuary attracts thousands of migratory birds from various parts of the globe, it is unusual to see an African Fish Eagle here, officials said.
As the North-East monsoon has become very active, thousands of birds have arrived at the sanctuary now. The lagoons in this area with their rich fish population attract thousands of migratory birds from countries as far as Siberia and other West Asian countries every year providing a visual treat to tourists and ornithologists.
The African Fish Eagle might have been a surprise visitor to the sanctuary this year, officials said, adding, it is now under the care of the wildlife personnel.
