Days after he raised questions on Brahmins using the 'Pandit' title without a proper degree, Rajasthan minister Vasudev Devnani today said he respects the community and its religious leaders but blamed "some people" for trying to spread religious disharmony.
Seeking to clarify, he said he has lived his life taking inspiration from the ideals of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhaya.
"Personally, I honour Brahmin community and its religious leaders. Some people are trying to spread religious disharmony but they will not succeed in their attempts," the school education minister said in a statement.
He further said he has always tried to give special representation to Brahmins in school curriculum in Rajasthan and has given priority to individuals who have given a new direction to the society.
Devnani had courted controversy as representatives of the Brahmin community had objected to him using the 'Professor' title before his name without having the required qualification.
A writ petition was moved in the Rajasthan High Court following which it sought a reply on the matter in four weeks.
Reacting to the court notice, Devnani on April 8 had commented that Brahmins too use 'Pandit' title before their names.
His comments had earned the wrath of the community and led to statewide protest.
On April 15, a police complaint was filed against Devnani for hurting religious sentiments.
However, no FIR was lodged.
