CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury also equated the situation in Uttar Pradesh to "jungleraj" (lawlessness).
"We get enraged (and rightly so) when cops attacked by stones in Kashmir. How are these BJP MPs and MLAs different when they attack police?(sic)" Yechury asked, referring to media reports in this connection.
"BJP MPs and MLAs are leading mobs to attack police stations in UP. If this is not jungleraj, what is? Constitutional responsibilities? (sic)" he further questioned, without naming any BJP parliamentarian or legislator.
Activists of the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other outfits had hurled stones and roughed up policemen that day, demanding the release of five men, who had been held for allegedly harassing some persons from the minority community.
A BJP MLA was alleged to be among the protesters though there were reports that he might have left before the violence began.
