"The happenings in Assam are unfortunate and a matter of serious concern. A large number of people have been displaced from areas like Kokrajhar and several innocent lives lost. But I expect that the state authorities would take firm steps to protect the lives and properties of the affected people, including those from the minority community," Ahamed told PTI.
Ahamed said he was in touch with Home Minister P Chidamabaram and came to know that the Centre had been closely monitoring the situation and had been supporting efforts by the state authorities to bring normalcy in the affected districts.
The minister, who is in now in Kozhikode in Kerala, said he came to know that there was already a let up in the situation and hoped that the state authorities would continue to make all efforts to bring normalcy.
He, however, said it was matter of concern that the minority communities had been under frequent attack in areas like Kokrajhar.
Ahamed said he also contacted Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who assured him that all effective steps would be taken to bring back normalcy.
Gogoi told him that camps had been set up to accommodate people from the violence-affected areas, Ahamed added.
