In the wake of twin blasts in Hyderabad four months ago where bombs had been planted on bicycles, the police here have made it mandatory for bicycle shop owners to maintain record of buyers.
The notification, issued by Ahmedabad Police Commissioner S K Saikia yesterday, is also applicable to sellers of battery-run motorbikes.
The buyers of bicycles and battery-run motorbikes will have to produce documents such as driving license, PAN card, voter ID, identification letter of the employee organisation, etc.
"This notification has been issued to maintain peace and security and to upkeep nation's security," it says.
The purchase bill must record the buyer's full name, precise address, and the frame/ chassis number of the vehicle.
The notification has been issued under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure which gives the commissioner the power to issue an order in urgent cases of "nuisance or apprehended danger".
Seventeen people were killed and over 100 were injured when two bomb explosions took place on February 21 at Hyderabad's Dilsukhnagar, a crowded shopping area.
