AHRC takes suo moto cognisance of recent Goalpara violence

Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) today took suo moto cognisance of the recent violence in Assam's Goalpara district in which six people have died so far.
A division bench of AHRC, comprising its chairman Justice (Retd) A H Saikia and member Tarun Phookan, has initiated the case based on media reports.
It issued notice to Assam Chief Secretary N K Das to conduct an inclusive inquiry into the incident through an additional chief secretary.
The commission has also directed that the report be submitted within 45 days of receipt of the notice.
The division bench took up yet another suo-moto cognisance and issued notice to the chief secretary to conduct an inquiry into a media report that around 2582 people, including a large number of primary school students, of several villages in Doboka area of Nagaon district were affected after using water from wells and tubewells contaminated with fluoride.
