An employee of Air India was today apprehended by the Aviation Security Group of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for allegedly trying to smuggle 400 grams of gold biscuits out of the city international airport, officials said.
According to the CISF, its staff apprehended Khan Mohammed Arif and his search resulted in the recovery of 400 grams gold worth around Rs 11 lakh kept in the battery slot of his mobile phone.
"When he was questioned, Khan told the officials that he got the gold biscuits from a passenger, who had arrived from Dubai and handed over the gold to him in order to clear the Customs check," sources said.
Arif was later handed over to the Customs department. His mobile phone and the seized gold were also handed over.
Sources said that they are in the process of finding out if Khan had indulged in similar crimes in the past.
Meanwhile, an Air India spokesperson said it has terminated the services of the agent.
"The services of the staff of AIATSL, the subsidiary of Air India, who is detained by security agency in Mumbai, have been terminated with immediate effect," Air India spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar said.
