Ammaiyappan, DMK ward secretary at Panaiyur, was found unconscious on the railway track with frothing at the mouth and he died in hospital, police said.
Police said he was abducted following a dispute over a local temple festival arrangements.
AIADMK panchayat president Mayandi has been arrested in connection with the mysterious death of the DMK functionary, police added.
