AIADMK today slammed VCK for extending support to Congress for the November 19 bypoll in Nellithope constituency in Puducherry, saying it showed the party's double standards and political opportunism.
Referring to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi's (VCK's) Tamil nationalist moorings and its vehement criticism of Congress over the Sri Lankan Tamil's issue, AIADMK said that by extending support to the "same Congress party" in Nellithope constituency, VCK has shown duplicitous double standards.
In a write up in AIADMK mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR, the party said VCK, which has strong pro-Tamil leanings, remained part of the DMK-Congress Front despite the alleged killings of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka in the last phase of the civil war in 2009.
Following such a "gimmick", AIADMK said, VCK has shown "pucca (real) opportunism" by extending support to Congress. "He (VCK chief Thirumavalavan) says he will uproot Congress party in Tamil Nadu and support it in Puducherry. Is it right, Thirumavalavan?" the party asked.
On October 31, VCK had pledged its support to the Congress party's nominee and Chief Minister V Narayanasamy in Nellithope constituency.
Narayanasamy is contesting election to win and become an MLA so that he could continue as Chief Minister.
This is in keeping with the stipulation that if non-members of the Assembly assume office as a minister they should get elected to the House within six months.
VCK had said it was "to protect the secular fabric" of Puducherry and to pave the way for development of the union territory.
