Expressing shock over the seizure of Rs 80 crore during an IT raid on a prominent institution, AIADMK today urged the Centre to depute a high-powered multi-departmental team of officials to look into the working of private medical colleges in the Union Territory.
The raid on the institute here and its group premises in Chennai yesterday and consequent seizure of heavy cash "is only a typical example of how the privately-run medical colleges in Puducherry are functioning," AIADMK Legislature Wing leader A Anabalagan told reporters here.
Stating that seizure of such huge cash was "shocking", he said all the seven private medical colleges in the Union Territory should be brought under IT scanner and other colleges should also be made accountable.
He alleged that the Puducherry government was keeping mum even as the medical colleges were collecting "hefty capitation fees" and this gave rise to suspicion that "government was virtually supporting the malpractices."
He also asked Lt Governor Kiran Bedi to play her part by persuading the Centre to depute a team to study the working of the colleges.
The Income Tax department yesterday made one of its biggest cash seizures, totaling Rs 80 crore, as it conducted searches on the premises of the institution in connection with an alleged tax evasion case.
