"The steep increase in rape cases in UP is disturbing. Despite the fact that the government is saying that we are taking care and handling rape cases, the increase in cases daily, gangrapes, rapes and then rapes in the police stations are really disturbing," AIMC president Shobha Ojha said.
The women Congress workers demanded stern action against the culprits and an end to "irresponsible comments" from leader and police.
"We want Akhilesh Yadav to act now. At the same time there should be no irresponsible, pathetic comments from leaders as well as the police. They have to be extra sensitive to women's issues," Ojha said.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has also demanded the UP Chief Minister's resignation in the wake of several rape cases being reported from the state.
"Over eight gangrape incidents have been reported since the Badaun rape case. There are no attempts to curb the rising cases of rape. I reiterate our demand that Akhilesh Yadav should resign over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Even the state's Director General of Police should be changed," said NCW chief Mamata Sharma.
