"The board had sent a letter to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in April in this regard following which a reply was received from the government stating that it favoured granting inheritance rights to all including widows, divorcees and married women," they said.
Though there is no time frame mentioned in the letter, the board members feel that since this government is giving importance to the issues related to the community, the amendment in the UP Zamidari Abolition and Land Reforms Act (1950) would be taken up soon, they said.
In its election manifesto, the Samajwadi Party had promised to take up the issues related to Muslims under the ambit of the law and such a move would send a positive message, they said.
The inheritance rights for women, a long-standing demand of the AIMPLB, was also raised in the previous Mayawati government which granted it partially, they said.
The issue was under discussion at all the fora of the board, including its last meeting in Mumbai in April.
Some other states have already extended this right, sources added.
