State-run Air India will commence flight services to Bhavnagar from Mumbai from tomorrow, after private carrier Jet Airways opted out of the route on the ground that it was not economically viable.
The new flight, to be operated by the national carrier's regional arm Alliance Air, will be a huge relief to frequent flyers between the two cities and operate four days a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Air India said in a statement.
Air India is commencing operations to the trade city of Saurashtra region in Gujarat to enhance regional connectivity as a part of its 'Connect India' programme, it said.
Air India will serve the route with a 70-seater ATR-72, it added.
Significantly, full service private carrier Jet Airways, which had earlier been operating its services to the city from Mumbai, had discontinued it last month saying there were very few flyers to enable it to sustain operations.
According to the AAI data, the number of passengers arriving/departing out of the Bhvanagar airport declined by a whopping 70 per cent to 3,055 in February this year against 9,695 passengers in the same period last year.
Recently, Air India commenced services on Bangalore- Vijyavada, Kolkata-Agartala routes as part of the 'Connect India' programme.
