At least 42 militants were killed when Pakistani military jets pounded militant hideouts in the restive North Waziristan province, the army said today.
Military jets targeted militant hideouts in Dandi Kachkol, Gurbaz and Mana areas of North Waziristan and killed 19 militants, a statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
Another 23 militants were killed yesterday in air-strikes by the Pakistani army, the statement added.
The air-strikes were part of the 'counter-insurgency' military operation "Zarb-i-Azb", launched on June 15 to flush out foreign and local militants hiding in North Waziristan region, following a daring militant attack on Karachi's Jinnah International Airport and failure of peace talks with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) negotiators.
The attack on Karachi Airport had killed 40 people and was followed by a similar attack on the training camp of the Airport Security Forces in Karachi very next day.
More than a thousand militants has been killed in 'counter-insurgency' operations since then, Pakistani army claims, and nearly a million people have been displaced from North Waziristan, a strong hold of local and Uzbek militants.
The claims, however, cann't be independently verified as media access to the area is limited by the army.
