Puducherry state unit of the AITUC has taken steps to seek legal remedy through Madras High court to ensure that Puducherry government restarted the public sector AFT mill here.
Addressing reporters here today the General Secretary of AITUC V S Abishegam said that the High court had already given a direction some years ago that the Puducherry government should run the mill in "as is where is condition'.
Instead of honouring the court directive the management of the mill had been declaring lay offs every six months causing hardships to the workers, he said.
Abishegam said that the AITUC had now taken recourse to legal battle to ensure that the Puducherry government restarted the mill. "We would also bring to the notice of the High Court that Puducherry government has committed contempt of court by failing to initiate steps in 2010 as per the then court order to restart the mill", he said.
Abishegam said that the Central government would also be cited as a respondent since the clearance from the Centre for disposal of the land belonging to the AFT mill in neighbouring Pattanur village was not available despite repeated representations by all trade union action committee. The sale proceeds would be of help to the mill to settle the dues to workers.
Abishegam said that arrangements were in full swing here by all trade unions to make the September 2 all India general strike called by Central Trade Unions and Federations a success. The general strike is aimed at condemning the 'Central government's initiatives to bring in changes in labour laws to favour capitalists'. He said that anti labour and anti farmers measures of the Centre would also be criticised through the general strike.
