The All India Unorganised Workers Congress (AIUWC) today demanded universalisation of social security as the right of workers in the country.

In a letter to Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar, AIUWC chairman Arbind Singh condemned the proposed Social Security Code.

"The AIUWC feels that the government's draft Social Security Code falls far short of meeting needs of the unorganised workers of the country," he said, a day before the International Labour Day.

It demands a comprehensive law for unorganised workers as both the 2nd Labour Commission had recommended an umbrella legislation for ensuring a minimum level of protection to them and the National Commission on Enterprises in Informal Sector also had emphasised it, saying the guarantee of social security was incomplete without simultaneous generation and protection of decent employment for workers, he said.

"Thus, social security as a right to all workers along with decent employment should have been the focus of any such effort of the government. The AIUWC demands many changes in the proposed Social Security Code, including definition and a minimum guarantee of social security scheme in the Code itself," Singh also said.
