The All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) today launched a mass awareness campaign about the 73rd Amendment that gave Constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj Institutions, and challenged the ruling National Conference for a public debate over its benefits.
The awareness campaign aims at educating people of the benefits the state would derive if "we implement provisions of the 73rd Amendment" of the Constitution, AJKPC president Anil Sharma said here.
The AJKPC president invited NC leaders for a debate to counter their claim that the 73rd Amendment if implemented would affect the special status of Jammu and Kashmir enshrined under Article 370 of the Constitution.
This is a baseless argument and has been orchestrated by people who do not believe in devolution of power, he said, alleging that the political leaders who want to remain the sole proprietor of the state try to mislead the people by drawing unnecessary connection between the 73rd Amendment and Article 370.
The AJKPC also published pamphlets in English, Urdu and Hindi detailing the benefits of the 73rd Amendment.
