Akal Takht, the top temporal seat of the Sikhs, today ex-communicated former Punjab minister Sucha Singh Langah from the Sikh community following his arrest in a rape case.
Langah, a baptized Sikh and a former Punjab PWD minister, was arrested by the Gurdaspur Police yesterday in the rape case filed on the basis of a complaint by the widow of a vigilance official.
After a marathon meeting, the five Sikh head priests led by Akal Takht Jathedar Gurbachan Singh announced that the "defamed Langah had been excommunicated from the Sikh 'panth' (community) for his bad deeds which had damaged the image of the community".
Talking to mediapersons, Gurbachan Singh said that an advisory committee of the Akal Takht, scholars and various Sikh religious leaders had sought strict action against Langah.
In view of the suggestions sent by prominent Sikh scholars and religious leaders, the five Sikh head priests decided to ex-communicate Langah, the Jathedar said.
Langah, a member of the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC), had hurt sentiments of the Sikh community, by and large, he added.

"The act of Langah is unpardonable which is the reason he has been ex-communicated from the Sikh panth and at the same time the Sikh community across the world has been asked to maintain distance from him," he said.
All Sikh institutions have been asked to cancel the membership of Langah, he added.
After a purported sex video went viral on the social media, Langah's party, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) had expelled him.
He also resigned from the SGPC. His resignation was immediately accepted by SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar.
