The former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, who made a comeback to the ring at this tournament after having to stay away for almost two years due to injuries, was at his clinical best as he controlled the bout from the word go.
"It wasn't easy. I know maybe it looked like it, but there is so much that needs to be factored in before you draw a conclusion such as this. Thakur fought well, and he is a bright prospect," he said.
Akhil also praised Haryana Police, his employers, saying, "They have supported so many sportspersons. We get pretty much all that we need at all times and that, for a sportsperson, is a massive thing. I really am thankful towards Haryana Police for being benevolent and supportive at all times."
He also thanked Dronacharya awardee coach Jaydev Bisht for sticking by him durings ome tough times.
"I also wish to thank NIS, Patiala, authorities and also the Sports Authority of India (SAI). They have taken extremely good care of me and that has made it possible for me to return, and indeed return stronger. I will be always indebted to them.
