"Our heads are hanging in shame because of the incident. We are sorry for it," said Haroon Mozawala, a AIMPLB member.

Mozawala spoke to mediapersons after he met the Mumbai Police Commissioner and other senior IPS officials to discuss the August 11 incident, when a protest against Assam riots turned violent as demonstrators torched vehicles and pelted stones, prompting police to fire in air and use batons to disperse the unruly mob.

"Islam does not preach violence... It teaches to live in peace", Mozawala said.

He appealed to those responsible for the Saturday violence to surrender.

"Anyways, God is not going to forgive you... But you can help the innocents, preventing their arrests by surrendering yourself to police," he said.

Police had arrested 23 persons in connection with the violence and have booked the accused and the organisers for murder.
