Trouble began yesterday when the lawyers had blocked traffic on the busy Allahabad-Kanpur road in protest against the alleged assault on some lawyers two days ago.
As the lawyers' protest was on, a group of Allahabad University students took out a rally canvassing for the upcoming students' union election.
The students asked the protesting lawyers to clear the road for their procession which the latter refused. This led to a clash with both sides engaging in stone-pelting.
