Almond, walnut rise on hike in import duty

Almond and walnut prices spurted at the wholesale dry fruit market in the national capital today after the government yesterday raised import duties up to 100 per cent such as almond and walnut, which are imported from the US and other developed nations.

Besides, rising demand from retailers and stockists amid fall in supplies from overseas markets also supported the trend.

Almond California prices rose by Rs 300 to conclude at Rs 19,300-19,500 per 40 kgs while its kernel prices went up by Rs 10 to conclude at Rs 690-700 per kg, respectively.

Walnut prices also traded higher at Rs 260-380 and Rs 600-1,000 against previous closing of Rs 240-330 and Rs 510-910 per kg.

Marketmen said increased offtake by retailers and stockists amid fall in supplies from overseas markets after the government yesterday raised import duties up to 100 per cent, which are imported from the US and other developed nations, mainly pushed up almond and walnut prices.
