The alumni of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) has created an online petition for reinstating Shashwati Goswami as the course director of the institute's Radio and TV Journalism department.
They also demanded withdrawal of the notice asking her to vacate her campus residential accommodation.
The former students said Goswami is a "highly competent, skilled, reputed and conscientious academician who is widely respected for her academic rigour and professional credentials, as much as for her strong sense of ethics, principles and honesty."
"... It is extremely disheartening to witness that Prof Goswami has been issued these totally unexpected, unjust and arbitrary orders by K G Suresh, Director General, IIMC," they said in the petition.
However, Suresh said she was appointed as the course director last year for the last academic session which is over now.
"I reviewed her performance and felt that the post should be given to somebody else," he said, adding that as head of the institution, he "regularly reviews" the perform ace based on the inputs of students, outside faculty and recruiters.
He said there is no permanent post of course director and Goswami will continue to be the associate professor which is a permanent post.
On the accommodation issue, he said there is no such facility for the IIMC faculty and the one provided to her was a transit hostel meant for Indian Information Service officers and foreign journalists.
Suresh said it was given to her in 2008 on "consideration" that she had small kids then.
Goswami refused to comment on the issue.
