Delhi-based Amanpreet Ahluwalia along with co-driver Venu Ramesh continued to lead the Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare as the challenging snaking roads and multiple hair-pin bends around popular hill station of Ooty took its toll on many a man and machines today.
While Amanpreet/Venu Ramesh in their Maruti Gypsy now lead with a cumulative three day timing of 03:05:37 hrs, Suresh Rana/Thakur, driving a Grand Vitara, still have a good chance of making a comeback being in second place and 4 minutes 16 seconds behind, having clocked 03:09:53 hrs till now.
Imran Khan/Gagan Vijay and their Gypsy is another 52 minutes 19 seconds behind the leader with a cumulative time of 03:57:56 hrs.
The extreme test of skill, speed and endurance is what makes rally racing exciting and Dakshin Dare lived up to its billing on the third day of the action-packed "Valley Leg" around the Nilgiris.
The Extreme four-wheel category saw Bangalore-based pair of Sanjay Agarwal and Shiva Prakash had a narrow escape when their yellow Gypsy skidded off the track and into a bush during the Stage 2 known as "Top Point".
The car had hit the pillar on the side of the track which resulted in the leakage of the oil section.
Another gypsy driven by Shahid Khan (co-driver Dhananjay) flipped over before coming to a stop while negotiating a sharp curve just after crossing the finish line during the Stage 3. Both of them came out of the vehicle unhurt but the accident resulted in them losing crucial points.
A Baleno, driven by Rajeev, had to retire midway after developing a mechanical failure during the Stage 3 which proved to be a bane for the rally drivers in the Extreme category. Out of the nine remaining, only six cars finished today in the said section.
