Entrusted with a new role to lead a beleaguered Congress party as its deputy leader in Lok Sabha, it was a "sweet" nostalgic return to the House for former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh after 30 years.
Singh, who took oath as a member of Lok Sabha today, had resigned as a member of the House in protest against Operation Bluestar on June 7, 1984--the security forces' action against Sikh militants in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He was a Congress MP at that time also.
Singh is now a Lok Sabha member from Amritsar after defeating BJP heavyweight and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
"It brings back some sweet memories. I had resigned exactly one day less 30 years ago on June 7, 1984," he told PTI.
Asked about his new role, he said "though our number is less, we will put up a strong fight in Lok Sabha."
He said though Congress got only 44 seats and BJP 282, Congress had won over 10 crore votes while BJP had 15 crore votes all over the country.
