Expressing concern over lack of support to Everesters from the state, the Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association (AMASA) today urged the state government to give due recognition to them.
AMASA president Tsering Wange in a statement said that the poor situation of the Everesters was due to lack of awareness on the potential of mountaineering and adventure sports in the state.
Comparing the recognition given to mountaineers from other states, Wange rued that the Arunachal government was yet to honour the Everesters and other sports personalities with cash incentives, land allotment and government job.
"The Assam government had honoured the Everesters of Assam with 20 lakh each, while other states had also given cash and other incentives," said Wange, while adding that the Arunachal government just awarded a gold medal, a certificate and a blanket each till date to the summiteers of the state.
"Our Everesters have been felicitated by the President, Prime Minister, Union Defence Minister, Union Tourism Minister, Union Sports Minister, Chief of Indian Army, Chief Ministers of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Sikkim," said Wange.
Further, the AMASA president said that the development of adventure sports and adventure tourism in Arunachal depended on due recognition to the sportspersons, opening up mountain expeditions to the unexplored peaks and adventure tourism awareness.
"There is also an urgent need to formulate mountaineering policy on the lines of Nepal government to boost the local economy, opening up of international border trade with Bhutan, China and Myanmar, and speedy execution of the two-lane BRO road between Bhalukpong and Tawang," he added.
