Amit Kumar takes listeners on down memory lane

Tracing that golden era of late 50s and 60s, singing star Amit Kumar today recalled how his father Kishore Kumar, the mercurial singing legend, used to 'jam' with SD and later on Pancham for conjuring timeless numbers, still topping the charts.
Speaking on the sidelines of "Zindagi EK Safar - A Tribute to Kishore Kumar", the talented playback singer recalled how he used to accompany father and S D Burman and later Pancham R D Burman to the 'Metro' auditorum during night shows of western musicals.
"I still recall that evening in 1959 when me, father and SD went to Metro for watching David Lean's 'The Bridge On River Kwai. And during the screening as we sat engrossed, the duo were seen exchanging notes. It was more of a sign language, father looked at him and he nodded.
"And later on I could see them humming 'ta ra ra pam...Ta ra ra pam' and breaking out into jigs. What later came out was Yeh Dil Na Hotah Bechara," the 'Yaad Ah Rahi Hai singer said.
There was numerous such instances involving Sachinkarta and father and later on Pancham of imbibing the unique and fresh notes from western tracks which will later on bring out haunting melodious score, with his voice, Amitkumar, said after the Big FM memorial.
"It is more than Baba sharing positive vibes which put to perfection blending musical notes from the west and all over the world into ours and something incredible would come out."
"Baba used to frequent Rhythm House with Sachinkarta. From the all English musical labels lying around they ordered the store to play the tunes. Ekta kore gaan sunchhe aar chokh bujhchhe aar dujone dujonber dike takachhe (the two listening to one track at a time with eyes closed and looking approvingly at each other)," Amitkumar recalled.

But when he scored the notes and Kishorekumar brought the lyrics to life there was something truly original.
"The Singh Nei Tobu Naam Tar Singho is one truly original song Baba put to life but again derived from his rich musical repertoire of world music, " he said.
Earlier Amit Kumar, possibly one of the most underrated singers having a golden voice and unmatched stage manners reminding Kishoreda, took the audiences on a memorable musical journey with the finest hits from the golden era including the theme song of the evening 'Zindagi Ek Safar' .
"We are looking forward to creating unique retro-listening experience with Kishore goldies across various age groups," a 92.7 Big FM spokesman said.
