Hamid passed away at the age of 94 after a brief illness in New Delhi yesterday.
In a resolution passed during a condolence meeting in the university, it was stated that Hamid took charge of the AMU at a very crucial juncture in the history of this institution.
"He was responsible for formulating major development policies aimed at reforming and streamlining the functioning of this institution," it said.
It was during his tenure that the historic AMU Amendment Act 1981 was implemented.
He was associated with a number of educational and social organisations and has left behind a void which will be difficult to fill, he said.
