The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University today charged the media with going overboard over the recent ragging incident in the campus and threatened to take legal action, provoking media persons to walk out of his press conference.
Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (rtd) Zamiruddin Shah, at the press meet, alleged that in the recent past, certain sections of the media had gone overboard by spreading distorted stories pertaining to the AMU.
The VC had called the press conference in connection with a case of alleged ragging registered last Friday against 12 students of the Jawaharlal Medical College of the AMU.
The VC said an inquiry had found that the confrontation between two groups of students was the result of a personal tiff and was not an incident of ragging.
When a reporter told the VC that the report on ragging was based on an FIR lodged by aggrieved student Jawed Khan at the Civil Lines Police, Shah retorted "the FIR is a fabricated one."
"We have identified the actual person who has written the FIR on behalf of complainant Jawed Khan," he said.

The VC said in future he would see to it that such "baseless news" was not reported and warned of legal action.
When the reporter raised his finger for seeking a clarification, the VC objected to this and asked him not to do so.
Provoked by VC's remarks, the media persons staged a walkout. Efforts by senior varsity officials to defuse the situation proved futile.
Scribes said they felt "humiliated" by the manner in which the VC had treated them.
