Condemning the suspension, Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association (AMUTA) also demanded that a committee be instituted to inquire into the matter.
Dr Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi, Associate Professor in the Department of History at AMU was yesterday suspended by the Vice-Chancellor for allegedly using objectionable language against him on social networking site Facebook.
A special meeting of AMUTA held today passed a resolution describing suspension as "hasty step" and demanded that the suspension of Dr Rezavi be "immediately withdrawn and a three-member committee of enquiry from external members of the executive council should be instituted to probe the matter".
This should have been followed by instituting an inquiry into the incident, AMUTA secretary Aftab Alam told newspersons, while calling for "freedom of expression".
He, however, cautioned teachers to be careful with their choice of words while dealing with the social media.
