The AN-32 courier service from Srinagar to Kargil would become operational from the first week of January to facilitate movement of people during the winter months, an official spokesman said.
Reviewing measures taken by the government for smooth transport facilities, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council Chairman, Haji Anayat Ali, made an announcement in this regard today, the spokesman said.
The frontier region of Ladakh usually remains cut off from the rest of the state due to heavy snowfall at Zojilla pass along the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
The highway was closed for vehicular traffic last week after high altitude areas, including Zojilla pass experienced first heavy snowfall of the season. The chances of its reopening are very bleak in the near future.
Ali directed the departments concerned to maintain close coordination for smooth operation of the service during this winter season, the spokesman said.
The chairman said in case of flight cancellation due to bad weather or any other reason, necessary arrangements should be made at Srinagar and Jammu airports so that the passengers don't face inconvenience.
