Gurpareet Bains, who made his name after creating a "cancer-fighting" curry in 2009, claims his lamb masala produces similar effects to sleeping pills.

The spicy dish contains an oil that is said to produce "intoxicating" effects, Daily Express reported.

The dish appears in the latest cook book by Bains, Indian Superspices, a collection of recipes designed to fight everyday illnesses.

Bains, who claims to turn traditional Indian dishes into disease-fighting concoctions, says he created the curry to help people combat the woes of sleep deprivation.

"Its ingredients have been used for millennia for their tranquilising properties."

Bains' insomnia-fighting recipe contains nutmeg, a spice which contains a psychoactive substance.

Experts recommend eating no more than half a nutmeg in any 24-hour period and Bains recommends that no more than one portion of his curry should be eaten per day, the report said.
