An angry mob thrashed a man, garlanded him with shoes and paraded him through the main market of Ghansali in Bhilangana block of the district after it learnt that he had taken a 16-year-old girl of another community to a hotel room.
The people became angry when they came to know that 18-year-old Azad Alvi had taken the girl of another community, hailing from Bhilangana block, to a hotel room in Ghansali, SSP Yogendra Singh Rawat said.
A protesting mob gathered at the hotel pulled the girl out of the room and beat up the man, he said.
The mob also garlanded the man with shoes and paraded him through Ghnasali bazar where they also vandalised shops owned by the Muslims, Rawat said, adding the police rushed to the spot and rescued the youth besides pacifying the mob.
Alvi who hails from Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh ran a hair cutting shop in Ghansali.
Rawat said further action would be be taken only after the girl's parents lodge a complaint at the police station.
Additional forces have been deployed in the area to keep a watch, he said.
