A woman in her early 20s from the city succumbed to swine flu, taking the death toll in West Bengal to 22, a senior Health department official said today.
"The woman in her early 20s passed away last night at a private hospital of Kolkata. Her condition slowly deteriorated and was put on ventilator. But she did not respond to any treatment and passed away last night," West Bengal Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Moloy Dey told PTI.
Seventeen persons tested positive for the H1N1 virus infection in the last 24 hours taking the total number of people affected in the state to 340 since January, he said.
Talking about senior CPI(M) leader Gautam Deb, who was today diagnosed with swine flu and put on ventilation at a city hospital, Dey said his "condition has improved a bit".
"He fell ill this morning while drinking tea. He was rushed to a private hospital where initially he was put on invasive ventilation. Later on he was transferred to a non-invasive ventilator after his condition improved... His condition has improved a bit," the health official stated.
In the last 24 hours, 25 patients were discharged from different hospitals in the state after they recovered completely from the disease, Dey said adding that so far 252 people have recuperated.
