Another woman dies in leopard attack in MP; toll rises to 3

A woman was mauled to death while a man was injured in an attack by a leopard in two separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district today, a Forest official said.

With the death of Sebwati Bai (30), the toll in the leopard attack incidents reported in the last three days has risen to three while four persons have been injured.

Meanwhile, one of the two man-eater leopards roaming in the district was trapped by Forest personnel from Garhi forest area at around 4 AM today, while efforts are on to trap another feline, said Garhi Forest Ranger A K Jhanwar.

Sebwati Bai was attacked by the big cat in the wee hours today when she was sleeping in a hut on a farmland in Khirka Ghati area, said Hariom Manu, Ranger, Badi Forest.

As she raised alarm, locals rushed to her help, but could not save her, he said.

"She was taken to Primary Health Centre at Bamhori, where doctors declared her brought dead," said Manu.

In another incident which occurred around 12.30 AM, Dev Chandra (60) was attacked by a feline at Chor Pipariya village.

"He was taken to the district hospital at Raisen from where the doctors referred him to Bhopal," he said.

Both the attacks occurred within a radius of 8-10 kms and it is believed that they were committed by the same leopard.

In the last three days, an eleven-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard in Bareli tehsil of the district while an 18-year-old tribal woman was attacked in Dagdaga village.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) DS Paliwal said three persons were killed and four others were injured in the five incidents in the recent past.

The injured persons are being treated in a hospital at Bhopal.

Paliwal said the families of the deceased would get a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each as per Forest Act.
