Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandra Babu Naidu asked irrigation officials today to draw up plans to divert flood waters from small streams in West Godavari to the Krishna river through the Polavaram canal.
The AP CM reviewed a meeting of irrigation officials on Friday about availability of irrigation to delta lands in the Krishna district for the present khariff season.
Farmers from the Krishna delta met the AP CM and expressed their concern on availability of irrigation water for the present khariff season due to scanty rains in the Krishna river basin and the poor state of water storage levels in both Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam reservoirs on the Krishna river.
Naidu heard them out and asked irrigation officials to assess the flow of flood waters in small streams of West Godavari which flows only during heavy rains.
An estimated 40 tmc of flood waters from these streams typically flow as waste water into the Bay of Bengal, from all the small streams in West Godavari district, which the AP CM has instructed officials to the Krishna river to benefit Krishna delta lands during this khariff season.
He told farmers that the Pattiseema irrigation project will be completed very soon and about 80tmc would be diverted from the Godavari river to Krishna river through the same Polavaram canal to protect the interests of Krishna district's farmers.
