Andhra Pradesh police said here today that it has received an Interpol red corner notice against Congress Rajya Sabha member K V P Ramachandra Rao who has been indicted by a US Federal Jury on charges of receiving bribes of USD 18.5 million from an American firm which was allowed to mine titanium in the state.
On April 23, the USA had approached India for Ramachandra Rao's arrest.
"Yes, today we received the red corner notice and the Crime Investigation Department (CID) is examining it," Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police B Prasada Rao told PTI.
Asked about the next course of action, the AP Police chief said "The notice has to be combined with a warrant. The CBI should get the warrant".
CID Additional Director General of Police confirmed T Krishna Prasad told PTI here that "we have received the red corner notice. It was not accompanied by a warrant. We have sent them (the CBI) a request, asking them to send us the warrant".
In a letter sent by the American National Crime Bureau through Interpol to CBI, the US authorities had said Rao should be put under "provisional arrest" until all the documents were handed over to India through diplomatic channels for his possible extradition to the USA to stand trial in Chicago.
CBI had then sent the letter to Andhra Pradesh police asking them to take action against Rao.
