In a morale-booster for the ruling TDP in Andhra Pradesh, its candidates today won two seats in the Legislative Council under the local bodies quota.
Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and Silpa Chakrapani Reddy won from Prakasam and Kurnool districts, respectively.
Srinivasulu Reddy bagged 724 votes while the rival YSR Congress candidate Atla Chinna Venkata Reddy secured only 13 votes and 17 votes were declared invalid, returning officer Hari Jawaharlal said.
Thanking all those who helped him, Srinivasulu Reddy said, "Our family is in public service for over 25 years. Once again it is an opportunity for me to serve as an MLC."
Earlier, alleging that TDP was indulging in unfair practises, opposition YSR Congress had announced boycott of the election.
TDP's Silpa Chakrapani Reddy defeated his YSRC rival Venkateswara Reddy from Kurnool.
In the reaction to the results, YSR Congress reiterated its allegation that TDP adopted unethical practises to win and "there was nothing to boast about".
"With due respect to the ethics and democratic values, we fielded candidates only at places where our numbers are more and did not venture into areas where we do not have majority. But TDP fielded candidates where it had no required numbers, engineered defections and lavishly used money power to win the seats in Prakasam and Kurnool," YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy alleged in Kurnool.
