Apollo to set up Rs 400 crore medical college and hospital

Apollo Hospitals has started the construction of a Rs 400 crore medical college and hospital with a capacity of 1,000 beds near here.
A 14-acre plot on Batanagar's Hiland Riverside has been provided free of cost by the state government where Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research would come up by by 2020.
"Since we will be providing medical education too, the government has given us the land completely free. We will only have to pay a nominal lease rent," Apollo Hospitals Group (eastern region) CEO Rupali Basu told PTI.
The first phase of the institute would be ready by 2017, with 500 beds for patients and 100 seats for medical students.
The superspeciality facility with 150 medical seats and 1000 beds would be ready by 2020, she said.
This would be the second medical college for Apollo after the one already operational at Hyderabad.
Besides the regular MBBS course, it would offer 18 other courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
"We will have all types of departments. There will be different types of courses in nursing, pathology, hospital management etc. We are also planning a health resource skill centre. We will also conduct research on various branches of medicince," Basu said.
The hospital would employ around 5,000 people including doctors, nurses and other staff.
Apollo already has a 600-bed multispeciality tertiary care hospital in Kolkata.
