The Madurai bench of Madras High Court today stayed appointment of a junior faculty as member of the Syndicate of Madurai Kamaraj University by MKU vice chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan, saying it was a violation of a Supreme Court order, restraining her from making appointments or promotions.
Justice T Raja stayed the appointment while admitting a petition by an Assistant Professor of Department of Economics, S Pushparaj.
The petitioner submitted that a division bench of Madras High court had set aside the VC's appointment on the ground that she did not fulfil the eligibility criteria.
Though the Apex Court had stayed the HC order, it had said the VC should not make any appointment or promotion without prior permission from the court, the petitioner said.
Besides, the VC had earlier withdrawn appointment of two junior professors as Syndicate members after a petition was filed against their appointment. Now she was again making the same mistake and had appointed a junior person as Syndicate member without ascertaining his seniority as per rules of MKU.
The VC should have sought the permission of the Supreme Court before appointing the respondent A Vijayarangan as Syndicate member, the petitioner contended.
The petitioner sought to quash appointment of Vijayarangan as Syndicate member and also a stay on his appointment, pending the petition.
