In a unique women empowerment initiative, the Indian Army has trained 52 women from socially backward sections in Chinta village in Bhaderwah district, in candle-making, providing them an opportunity to earn their livelihood while sitting at home.
For the women in this remote village in the mountainous district of Bhaderwah in Chenab valley, the initiative will go a long way in making them financially more independent and improve the condition of their households.
"To help socially and economically weaker sections in the remote village of Bhaderwah, the Army has taken several initiatives including conducting of candle-making classes for women at the remote Chinta village of Bhaderwah," Defence spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta told PTI.
"The classes were conducted from January 7 this year. A total of 52 women from socially and economically backward strata of society have benefitted and trained on nuances of candle-making with an aim to enable them to become financially independent and self-employed," he said.
He said that the Army wants to empower the female residents of these remote villages so they too can play their part in improving the overall livable condition of their families.
"The project will go a long way in advancement and empowerment of women of the region and would help them to pursue an independent vocation and make them confident and independent individuals," he said.
