The Army has assisted 51 students from the economically weaker section in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir in getting free admission to various universities in the country under Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme
"To facilitate higher education to the local students, this year, Army organised admission of 51 students of Kargil district in graduate courses under the Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu and Kashmir," an army official said here today.
He said that the prospective students were identified and their online registration carried out by the army.
"Now these students are in advanced stages of counselling and being sent to the selected university for admission to various courses. They were also assisted by providing a guide to accompany them till the university and carry out necessary co-ordination liaison," the official said.
He said that, since the scheme was launched, the number of students availing the facility from Kargil district has been minimal.
"Last year, the Army stepped in to assist in the same and helped 44 students to get admission under the scheme," he said.
He further said that the students selected from Kargil last year were now studying in Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur.
"Their admission last year on complete scholarship has helped to spread the word, even as far as the remote Zanskar Valley, whose students for the first time have now registered for admission this year," he said.
