Troops on patrol were fired upon by the militants in Chariduar area of the district bordering Arunachal Pradesh and a jawan was killed in the encounter which followed, they said.
The slain jawan has been identified as Raju Kumar of 7 Bihar Regiment.
One of the militants was caught, while the others fled, the officials said.
