Averting a calamity, the Army today plugged a major breach in an embankment on the Ghaggar river near village Pullad in Moonak sub-division of Sangrur district in Punjab.
A calamity has been averted with the plugging of the breach today by the Army, which was also assisted by the Sangrur district civil administration, a defence release issued here said.
The breach was caused due to torrential rains which inundated the low-lying areas of the region thus posing a grave threat to the life and property of the locals. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner had submitted a requisition to the Army authorities in Patiala yesterday requesting for emergent help and assistance to plug the wide breach on the river, it said.
Reacting to the situation, Army dispatched a column for support of the civil authorities and local population, along with necessary manpower, boats and rescue equipment.
Due to timely reaction and all-out efforts in an overnight operation, the wide breach was plugged by morning today, the release said.
"Keeping the safety of precious life and property as a priority, close coordination is still being maintained between civil administration and Army flood control rooms established at Patiala and Sangrur for any further help," it said.
Notably, river Ghaggar is infamous for causing floods along its course whenever heavy rainfall occurs in lower Shivalik hills and parts of Haryana.
