With the arrest of two persons, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has seized huge quantity of Norphine - a substance widely misused by drug addicts - and busted an illegal manufacturing unit in Haryana, police said today.
Buprenorphine Hydrochloride, commonly known as Norphine, is used at drug de-addiction centres and as pain relievers prescribed to cancer patients.
The accused have been identified as Sunil Sharma (37) and Naresh Kumar Chhikara (53). They have been booked under relevant sections of Drug and Cosmetic Act, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
While Sharma allegedly used to stock the substance at a godown in east Delhi's Mayur Vihar area, which was raided by a police team, Chhikara was arrested after the police team raided his factory at the outskirts of Haryana's Gohana town where he was allegedly manufacturing Norphine without any license.
Sharma had earlier worked at a medical shop and had experience in storage of drugs. He also had knowledge of the loopholes in the trade. He roped in Chhikara and engaged him as his source, Yadav added.
"The police have recovered around 1,40,000 and 6,000 ampoules of Buprenorphine Hydrochloride from Sharma and Chhikara's possession respectively," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar.
