Art by masters and Modern Indian art up for auction

A signed oil painting of god Ganesha, in a riot of colours by M F Husain is the opening lot of 76 works of art set to go under the hammer here tommorow.
The untitled (Ganesha) painting sourced from a private collection in Mumbai has been estimated to fetch between Rs 50 lakhs and Rs 75 lakhs at the "Significant Indian Modern Art" auction.
Two other works by the late Indian master including one whose provenance has been listed as from his own family also listed in the auction.
Apart from Husain, the upcoming auction features artworks from other Indian modern artists, such as S H Raza, F N Souza, H A Gade, K K Hebbar, Ram Kumar, Ganesh Pyne, Jogen Chowdhury Bikash Bhattacharjee and Laxma Goud.
Besides works by masters Rabindranath Tagore and M V Dhurandhar are also featured.
Ten per cent of the total proceeds of the sale organised by Delhi Art Gallery is set to go to Outset, a philanthropic organisation dedicated to supporting new art by bringing private funding from its patrons, partner

"The low price estimates and absence of a buyer's premium, will be a major incentive for collectors and art lovers, and we look forward to their support towards the event through their active participation and trustees to public museums and art projects," said Ashish Anand, director, Delhi Art Gallery.
According to Anand the lots reflect "the richness and diversity of 20th century Indian modern art".
A 1934 watercolour pen and ink sketch on paper inscribed, signed and dated in Bengali "To Rani/ Rabindra/ 22.1.34'" by Rabindranath Tagore features in the upcoming auction. With its provenance listed as from an important private collection the artwork, a national treasure and thus nonexportable is estimated to fetch between Rs 40,00,000 and Rs 60,00,000.
A sculpture by Himmat Shah fashioned out of Plaster of Paris in 1982 signed in Gujarati and English and dated in English at the base, sourced from an important private collection in Delhi has been estimated to fetch between Rs 15,00,000 and Rs 22,50,000.
Feroze Gujral, who founded Outset in 2011 says she is "looking forward to a very successful auction."
"We are looking to raise funds for our various philanthropic projects in the arts through 2014-15. We are very excited with this association" said Gujral.
