Article on formalin used for fish preservation affects sale

The sale of fish imported from outside the state, especially Andhra Pradesh, was affected in the Mizoram state capital after an article in the health department journal said that formalin was used for preservation of fish and make it appear to be fresh.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr Thangchungnunga wrote in the November 2016 issue of 'Hriselna', the state health department house journal, that the people who sent fish to Mizoram injected formalin for its preservation and also for giving a fresh look to the fish.
The allegations of the doctor went viral in the social media causing panic among the people and resulting in the sale of fish going down rapidly.

Meanwhile, state health department's Food and Drugs Administration Joint Director Lalsawma said that they had never tested fish imported from outside the state for formalin or any other chemicals.
"Recently we collected samples of vegetables grown in the state for tests to ascertain presence or otherwise of insecticides and pesticides," Lalsawma said.
The tests results were expected soon, he said.
