Ten leading contemporary artists like Anish Kapoor, Subodh Gupta, Dayanita Singh, Rashid Rana and others have donated artworks to be sold at Christie's second India auction to benefit Khoj, an artist residency.
The sale, scheduled on December 11, in Mumbai is offering works by top Indian artists like Jamini Roy, Tyeb Mehta and FN Souza and one by V S Gaitonde, the artist whose work had fetched a record at Christie's debut India auction in 2013.
"A not-for-profit organisation, Khoj has never been driven by financial gain, seeking to operate outside of the established market. Many of the artists who have walked through the metaphorical and literal doors of Khoj have since achieved international critical and commercial acclaim," says Pooja Sood, Director, Khoj.
The artist residency, set up in the year 1997 with the aim of providing an alternate forum for experimentation outside of institutional frameworks is considered the cultural laboratory for hundreds of artists across India and South Asia.
Artists likelike Subodh Gupta, Bharti Kher and Atul Dodiya are represented in major international institutions and collections and have participated in biennales the world over.
"I am very happy to support the vital role Khoj is playing in contemporary art practice in India today. It is rare to see an institution giving so much to develop and support artists. Without experimentation there is no invention..." says Anish Kapoor.
The Mumbai-born British sculptor has gifted an acrylic titled "In Mind" has been estimated at Rs 25 lakhs to Rs 35 lakhs.
